Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and his cabinet are reportedly preparing to take action against unaided and allegedly illegal madrasas across the state. A notification regarding the move would be issued soon.
Bengal govt planning crackdown on illegal madrasas
Speaking about the decision, BJP MLA Sajal Ghosh said, “This was our agenda all unaided and illegal madrasa will be stopped in Bengal.”
He further added, “It’s not a drive against the Muslim community. We don’t get a doctor or an engineer from a madrasa. It’s not against madrasa, all illegal institutions will be stopped.”
Earlier, BJP MLA Arjun Singh also spoke about the government’s plans to restrict public namaz on roads and open spaces.
While addressing the issue, Singh told India Today, “The CM has given many orders during the Cabinet meeting. Namaz will not be allowed in the streets. Let them pray at mosques, but on the streets, it won’t be tolerated.”
Singh also referred to public prayers previously held at Kolkata’s Red Road area. According to him, such gatherings would no longer be permitted by the administration.
“Such a thing won’t be seen. These are court orders,” Singh said.
He further alleged that during the tenure of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, public prayers on Red Road had affected Army training schedules, as the stretch falls under the control of the Ministry of Defence.
