Students protested against selling eggs in the ‘Pure Veg’ canteen of LD Engineering College, Ahmedabad. Following complaints of hurting religious sentiments, the administration has banned the sale of egg dishes.
Ahmedabad: L.D. present in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. There has been a big controversy over selling eggs in the canteen of the College of Engineering. The matter heated up when some students objected to the fact that omelettes and boiled eggs were being sold in the ‘pure vegetarian’ canteen. Following the protest by the students, the college administration took immediate action and temporarily banned the sale of egg dishes.
A group of students had complained that there was a ‘Pure Vegetarian’ board outside the canteen, but egg products were being sold inside. The students also alleged that the same utensils were being used to prepare vegetarian food and eggs. He described it as hurting his religious and cultural sentiments. In this matter, the students submitted a complaint letter to the college principal and the vice-chancellor of Gujarat Technological University.
After receiving the complaint, college principal N.N. Bhupatani investigated the matter and sent a show cause notice to the canteen contractor. They have been given strict instructions that henceforth nothing made from eggs will be served in the canteen.
Officials have made it clear that the current contract of the canteen is ending next month. If the contractor does not follow the instructions, his contract will not be renewed. It is being told that about one and a half months ago, notice was given to the canteen owner on a similar complaint. Apart from the egg controversy, students have also complained to the college administration about the poor quality of food, uncleanliness and violation of safety norms in the canteen. At present, the sale of eggs in the canteen has been completely stopped.
