Eating Rules: Why should one wash hands and feet before eating? The reason is given in Brahma Purana

food rules

Brahma Purana Food Rules: To stay healthy, it is as important to follow the rules of eating as it is to take nutrition. In Hindu scriptures, food is considered a Yagya, hence in Brahma Purana, some rules have been made to be followed before, during and after food. The most important rule among these is to wash hands and feet thoroughly before eating. Not only this, there is also a rule to chant the mantra before eating food.

According to Brahma Purana, breathing becomes faster while eating. It is said in the Puranas that every human being has a certain number of breaths and their lifespan depends on these breaths, hence washing hands and feet before meals gives peace to the body and balances the breaths. Apart from this, it is said in the Puranas that eating food following these rules provides complete auspicious results along with health.

Scientifically speaking, washing hands before eating removes harmful microorganisms like bacteria, viruses and dirt present in the hands. This reduces the risk of food borne diseases. Some health experts also say that washing feet and face with cold water relaxes the body and allows you to concentrate more on food. Therefore, washing hands and feet before meals is considered a good habit from both spiritual and health point of view. Following this small rule not only maintains cleanliness but also develops a healthy lifestyle.

Chant this mantra before eating food

Bhojan Mantra must be chanted before eating food. This pleases Annapurna Mata and there is no shortage of money and grains in the house. “Om Annapurne Sada Purne Shankar Pranavallabhe, Gyan Vairagya Siddhyaartham Bhikshaam Dehi Cha Parvati” means O Annapurna Mata, who is always perfect and beloved of Lord Shankar, grant me alms (food) for the attainment of knowledge and renunciation. The meaning of this mantra says that food not only gives us physical energy but also gives us energy to attain right understanding and freedom from attachment in worldly life.
