Does making E20 petrol use a lot of water?
The government says that the claim that 10,000 liters of water is used to make one liter of ethanol is not true. In a modern ethanol plant, about 3 to 5 liters of processed water is used for every liter of ethanol. Many plants also reuse used water through ‘zero liquid discharge’ technology. The government also said that only surplus rice is used to make ethanol, which is approved after the country’s food security needs are met. Apart from this, the share of maize in ethanol production is also continuously increasing, because its cultivation requires less water as compared to paddy.
Can E20 petrol damage the engine?
According to the government, large-scale trials have been conducted in cars and two-wheelers on E20 petrol. In these tests, the performance of vehicles was tested by driving them for thousands of kilometers. The results found no major negative impact on the engine, driving experience or fuel efficiency. The government says that only minor differences have been seen in the mileage. At the same time, engines designed for E20 can also take advantage of the better octane capacity of ethanol. However, some older vehicles may need some rubber parts replaced a little earlier than usual.
Will E20 petrol void warranty or insurance?
The government has clarified that there is no impact on the warranty and insurance of vehicles which have been designed for E20 or whose manufacturers approve of it. Vehicle manufacturing companies and insurance companies have also clarified their position in this regard.
Does the sugar in E20 petrol cause ants and bees?
Many such claims have gone viral on social media. According to the government, fuel-grade ethanol undergoes a complete distillation process, hence there is no sugar in it. Apart from this, such elements are also added to it which make it undrinkable and also does not attract insects.
How will the country benefit from the E20 programme?
The government says that the ethanol blending program has reduced dependence on crude oil imports, thereby saving foreign exchange. Along with this, payments to farmers have increased and it has also helped in reducing carbon dioxide emissions. According to the government, India achieved the target of 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol in December 2025 ahead of schedule. At present the ethanol production capacity of the country has reached about 2,000 crore liters and there are plans to increase it further in the coming time.
