Durg Lok Sabha constituency of Chhattisgarh is one of the 543 seats in the country and 11 in the state. Here all the political parties have started preparations for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This election is going to be high profile on this seat. Here Congress leader Rajendra Sahu is going to face Vijay Baghel. Vijay Baghel is the nephew of former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel. Vijay Baghel had contested from Patan assembly constituency against Bhupesh Baghel during the assembly elections held last year. A tough contest was witnessed between the two leaders. However, it was Bhupesh Baghel who won. But Vijay Baghel was definitely successful in cornering Bhupesh Baghel in Patan. Vijay Baghel is currently the MP here. The Congress Party had won the first 6 elections here.
He had won from here in 2019. Vijay Baghel had defeated Congress’ Pratima Chandrakar. While Vijay Baghel got 61.1 percent votes, Pratima Chandrakar got 32.86 percent votes. While Gitanjali Singh of BSP, who stood third, got 1.45 percent votes. SRDP’s Hidar Bhati, who stood fourth, did not get even one percent of the votes here.
BJP won by 391978 votes in 2019
In 2019, BJP’s Vijay Baghel defeated Congress Party’s Pratima Chandrakar by 391978 votes. BJP’s Vijay Baghel got 849,374 votes while Congress party’s Pratima Chandrakar got 4,57,396 votes. Whereas Gitanjali Singh of Bahujan Samaj Party got only 20,124 votes. Hidar Bhati, who stood fourth in this election, got 12,107 votes. Hidar Bhati was contesting on SRDP ticket. Earlier in 2014, Tamradhwaj Sahu of Congress Party had won. Tamradhwaj Sahu defeated BJP’s Saroj Pandey by 16848 votes. While Tamradhwaj Sahu got 570,687 votes, Saroj Pandey got 5,53,839 votes. While Vishwa Ratna Sinha of Aam Aadmi Party, who stood third, got 17,455 votes. Independent Arun Joshi, who stood fourth, got 16,529 votes, while Munna Chandrakar, who stood fifth, got 15,600 votes.
Election history of Durg
In the first election held in Durg, Vasudev S Kirolikar of Congress Party had won. Mohan Lal Bakliyal in the second and third elections held in 1957 and 1962, Vishwanath Tamaskar of Congress in 1967, Chandulal Chandrakar of Congress in 1968, Mohan Jain of Janata Party in 1977, Chandulal Chandrakar of Congress in 1980 and 1984, Purushottam Kaushik of Janata Dal in 1989. Chandulal Chandrakar in 1991. After this, Tarachand Sahu of Bharatiya Janata Party won four consecutive times in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004. In 2009, BJP’s Saroj Pandey won.
Durg Lok Sabha vote math
There are total nine assembly seats under Durg Lok Sabha seat. In this, BJP has won on seven seats while Congress party has won on two. Durg has 9 assembly seats – Vaishali Nagar, Bemetara, Ahiwara, Navagarh, Patan, Saja, Durg City, Durg Rural and Bhilai Nagar. BJP’s Bhupesh Baghel has won from Patan assembly seat. There are total 19,40,269 voters in Durg Lok Sabha. Among these, the number of male voters is 9,61,685, the number of female voters is 9,78,518 while the number of third gender voters is 66. In 2019, the total voting percentage here was 71.74%. If we talk about caste votes, Durg Lok Sabha constituency is dominated by Kurmi, Yadav and Sahu votes. Here Sahu voters are 30-35 percent, Kurmi voters are 20-22 percent, Yadav voters are 12-15 percent and Satnami voters are 20-22 percent.
Bhilai Steel Plant, the largest factory in the Asia continent, is established here in the fort situated on the banks of Shivnath river. Durg is also called Mini India. The fighters of Durg district have made a big contribution in the freedom struggle. Three big pilgrimage sites of Jain community – Nagpura and Kaivalyadham are in Durg district.
