Establishment of Udaipur
The history of Udaipur begins in 1558, when Maharaja Uday Singh of the Rajput Sisodia dynasty transferred his capital from Chittorgarh here. Udaipur became the historic capital of the state of Mewar and since then the city became a symbol of the Rajputs’ pride and glory. It is said that Maharaja Uday Singh searched for a safe place for the establishment of Udaipur, where they could get protection from enemies. The city not only became a military base, but also became the center of art, culture and business.

Capital development
Udaipur remained the capital of Mewar till 1818. After India’s independence in 1947, it became a part of Mewar province and became an important city in the state of Rajasthan.

Controversy over establishment dates
Historians have differences regarding the date of establishment of Udaipur. Some say that it was established on April 15, 1553, the proof of which is found in Moti Mahal. Moti Mahal, which is considered the first palace of Udaipur, is now in ruins, but is being preserved by the Motimagri Trust.
Some other historians believe that Udaipur was founded on the day of Akha Teej. However, there is no concrete evidence or inscription available in support of this date, so that it can be clear.
