What is the importance of Devshayani Ekadashi?
Ekadashi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha is called Devshayani Ekadashi. There is a religious belief that on this day Lord Vishnu goes into yoga nidra on the bed of Sheshnag in Ksheer Sagar. After this, they rest for the next four months i.e. Chaturmas. Then Lord Vishnu wakes up on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi of Kartik Shukla Paksha. Marriage, house warming, mundan, sacred thread ceremony and other auspicious works are not performed during Chaturmas. But this time is considered best for worship, fasting, chanting, penance and introspection.

Do not consume meat, alcohol and Tamasic food
On the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, one should completely stay away from meat, fish, eggs, alcohol and other Tamasic food. Satvik food and devotion to Lord Vishnu are considered best on this day.
avoid eating rice
Eating rice is prohibited on the day of Ekadashi. According to religious belief, consumption of rice on this day is considered against the rules of fasting.
don’t insult anyone
On the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, one should avoid insulting the poor, elderly, saints, parents and needy people. It is believed that doing this does not please Lord Vishnu.
Stay away from lies and deceit
According to religious beliefs, lying, cheating or snatching someone’s rights on this day is considered inauspicious.
Do not pluck basil leaves without rules
Tulsi is very dear to Lord Vishnu. If basil leaves are required for puja, it is considered better to pluck them a day in advance. It is advised to avoid plucking Tulsi on the day of Ekadashi.
Do not start auspicious works
Chaturmas starts from Devshayani Ekadashi. Therefore, during this period, marriage, housewarming, engagement and other big auspicious functions are avoided.
