When is Diwali 2024?

People are still confused about the date of celebrating the festival of Diwali. According to Hindu scriptures, the festival of Diwali is celebrated on the new moon night. After killing the Lankan king Ravana and conquering Lanka, Shri Ram returned to his birthplace Ayodhya. In this celebration, Ayodhya city was decorated with lights. Lord Ram was given a grand welcome. That day was the Amavasya date of Kartik month. Since then the tradition of celebrating Diwali has been going on.

Bhopal’s astrologer and palmist Vinod Soni Pauddar says that Diwali is celebrated on Kartik Amavasya Tithi, but this time Amavasya Tithi is on both 31st October and 1st November, due to which there is confusion among the people. According to the Vedic calendar, this time the date of Amavasya is starting from the afternoon of 31st October, which will end in the evening of the next day i.e. 1st November. Amavasya Tithi will start from 2:40 PM on 31st and will continue till 4:42 PM on 1st November. After this Pratipada Tithi will start.

According to the Vedic calendar, there is a tradition to perform Lakshmi Puja on Diwali in the evening and night during Amavasya Tithi and Pradosh Kaal i.e. from after sunset till late night. In such a situation, celebrating Diwali on 31st October on Amavasya Tithi, Pradosh Kaal and Nishita Kaal Muhurta will be very auspicious and Shastra Samvat will be correct. The date of Amavasya will end in the evening on 1 November. In such a situation, those celebrating Diwali on November 1 will be considered wrong and inauspicious. Festivals should be celebrated only in Purva Pradosh Kaal Tithi. In such a situation, the festival of Diwali should be celebrated on Pradosh Vyapini Amavasya date only. Udaya Tithi has no meaning.
