LPG Subsidy 10 Lakh Income Rule: By sending a new SMS to LPG consumers, the government has warned of stopping the gas subsidy for those whose income is more than Rs 10 lakh. Know who will be affected, what are the rules, how to complain and what will happen after the subsidy is stopped.
LPG Subsidy Alert: These days, a special SMS is reaching the mobile phones of millions of LPG consumers across the country, which has increased the concern of many families. It has been said in this message that if the annual taxable income of a family is more than Rs 10 lakh, then its gas subsidy can be stopped. Also, consumers have been asked to respond within 7 days. After these messages being sent by the oil companies, people are wanting to know why the government has taken this step, who will be affected by it and what should they do if someone has received the notice by mistake.
To whom is this SMS being sent?
According to sources, government oil companies like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum are checking the data of those consumers whose income or any member of their family is showing more than the prescribed limit in the income tax records. Such consumers are being informed through SMS that if they do not agree with the information available, then lodge a complaint within 7 days. If response is not given within the stipulated time, their LPG subsidy may be stopped. The government says that subsidy benefits should reach only needy families. Therefore, financially capable people are being identified and removed from the subsidy list.

No new rules, strict adherence to old law
Many people feel that the government has implemented some new rule, whereas it is not so. In fact, the Central Government had made this rule in the year 2015 itself that families whose annual taxable income is more than Rs 10 lakh will not get LPG subsidy. Although earlier this system was based on self-declaration. That means consumers themselves gave information. But now the investigation is being done directly through income tax data and digital records. This is the reason why many people have suddenly started receiving notices. Experts believe that due to the increasing use of digital data, the government is now able to identify beneficiaries more accurately.
What to do if the notice has come by mistake?
The government and oil companies have also provided a complaint option for consumers who feel their income is less than Rs 10 lakh or there is an error in the records. Consumers can lodge complaints on toll free number 1800-2333-555. Apart from this, online complaint facility is also available on the official portal of the concerned oil company. Experts advise that if someone has received such a message, instead of ignoring it, one should clarify his/her situation in time, so that no problem arises in the future.
What will happen if subsidy stops?
If a consumer’s LPG subsidy stops, it does not mean that his gas connection will be stopped. The consumer will continue to get the gas cylinder as before, but he will have to buy the cylinder at the market price. This means that the full price of the cylinder will have to be paid and the subsidy amount will not be returned to the bank account.
‘Give It Up’ campaign has already been run
The government has already appealed to financially capable people to voluntarily give up LPG subsidy. Under the ‘Give It Up’ campaign, lakhs of people voluntarily gave up the subsidy, so that its benefits could reach the poor and needy families. The government claims that such initiatives have helped in strengthening the Ujjwala scheme and other welfare schemes.
Why is this decision important?
Experts on energy and economic matters believe that the government is now working towards making the subsidy system more targeted and transparent. Its aim is to ensure that government assistance reaches only those who really need it. However, there is a possibility of data errors and technical problems in this process. In such a situation, it is important for consumers to keep checking their records and bank information from time to time.
