Lawyers’ boycott extended till July 15

New Delhi [भारत]July 14 (ANI): The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) on Tuesday extended its judicial work boycott till July 15 in protest against the proposed move to increase the pecuniary jurisdiction of Delhi district courts from Rs 2 crore to Rs 10 crore. The association has called upon its members to stay away from both physical and virtual hearings before the Delhi High Court.

The decision was taken unanimously at an emergency meeting of the DHCBA Executive Committee held on Tuesday. A day before this, the association had called for staying away from work on July 14. In a resolution passed after the meeting, the executive committee appreciated the “full cooperation and solidarity” shown by the members in following the call to stay away from work on Tuesday.

“The Executive Committee of the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) deeply appreciates the full cooperation and solidarity extended by its members in calling for abstaining from work on July 14,” the resolution said.

Why is there protest?

The association said it has unanimously resolved to continue the protest on July 15 in view of the full court’s recommendation of the Delhi High Court. The recommendation is to increase the pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts from Rs 2 crore to Rs 10 crore, a move strongly opposed by the DHCBA. Accordingly, DHCBA requested all its members to refrain from appearing before the Delhi High Court on 15th July, both physically and virtually.

Earlier on Tuesday, DHCBA president and senior advocate N Hariharan visited various courtrooms and appealed to the lawyers to support the bar’s call to stay away from work. While most of the lawyers stayed away from the proceedings, Hariharan also urged those who appeared to stand with the bar. He said the proposed changes could have far-reaching consequences for the legal profession.

‘Lawyers’ livelihood will be affected’

DHCBA has consistently maintained that enhancing the pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts would significantly dilute the core civil jurisdiction of the Delhi High Court, impact the practice and livelihood of a large number of lawyers, and alter the existing distribution of civil cases in the capital.
