Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has accused Delhi Police of illegally detaining youth near Jantar Mantar. Calling it unconstitutional, the party demanded the immediate release of those detained and warned of a march to the police headquarters if the action is not stopped.
New Delhi [भारत]July 25 (ANI): Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Saturday alleged that Delhi Police has been illegally detaining youth from Jantar Mantar and its surrounding areas for the past few days and demanded an immediate stop to such action.
The party’s chief spokesperson Saurav Das alleged that the police had detained several youths, and described the action as “illegal” and “unconstitutional”.
“For the last two-three days, Delhi Police has been illegally detaining many youth and young looking people from the areas around Delhi and especially around Jantar Mantar. Such detention is completely illegal and unconstitutional,” Das alleged.
Delhi Police accused of illegal detention
He further claimed that lawyers and others associated with the organization were helping the detained people.
Das alleged that a few days ago, three students carrying 300 food packets were detained at Nizamuddin police station and were later released after the intervention of lawyers, but claimed that the food packets were not returned.
Das said the party has submitted a statement to the Delhi Police Commissioner demanding end of the alleged detention and immediate release of those detained.
Demand to stop action, warning of march to headquarters
He alleged, “We have requested them, or should we say demanded, that this illegal detention of people and creating an atmosphere of fear and the kind of siege that is being done around Jantar Mantar should be stopped immediately. The police should desist from such actions… and those who have been detained should be released immediately.”
He further alleged that the police have also threatened the lawyers and warned that if the alleged actions are not stopped, the protesters at Jantar Mantar will march to Delhi Police Headquarters and hold a peaceful protest.
Das said, “If Delhi Police and the Government of India feel that this is a war zone, then they should declare it. In any case, we will hold a peaceful protest… if they do not stop it immediately.”
Meanwhile, the CJP has called for a nationwide candle march on July 26 at 6 pm, urging people to gather at their respective district collector offices to show solidarity with the victims of police brutality. He appealed to student unions and other organizations to coordinate permissions and logistics, read out students’ demands during the assembly, and participate in a silent candle march with one candle per person.
Answer sought on resignation of Education Minister
Earlier, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Saturday said the group wants a clear “yes or no” response from the central government on its demand for resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan ahead of a scheduled meeting with the government later in the day. (ANI)
