Before the arrival of monsoon in Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has taken stock of the preparations to deal with waterlogging. 34 lakh metric tonnes of silt has been removed from the drains and people have been appealed to lodge complaints through 311 app.

Monsoon is about to arrive and the Delhi government has geared up to save the city from waterlogging. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, “Cleaning of drains has been done on a large scale to improve the drainage system and for easy drainage of rain water.”

Large scale silt removal campaign in Delhi

The administration said that as part of the strategy to deal with monsoon, 34 lakh metric tonnes of silt has been removed from the drains. This campaign mainly focuses on those major drains, sensitive places and areas where there were repeated flood-like situations in the last monsoon season.

Special attention on flood prone areas

Authorities have identified the areas most prone to water logging and have intensified cleaning activities there. The administration is also using technology to monitor the work and ensure that the drainage system works properly during heavy rains.

Citizens will be able to complain through 311 app

To increase public participation in this campaign, residents have been appealed to report waterlogging, clogged drains, overflowing sewage or other civic problems using the 311 smartphone app. Officials said that complaints made through the app during monsoon will be taken action on priority basis.

CM Rekha Gupta herself reviewed the preparations

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta herself is constantly reviewing the drainage and flood control systems. He said, ‘The administration is committed to reducing waterlogging and ensuring that the people of Delhi do not face much problems during heavy rains.’

Many agencies are working together

The Delhi government, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Public Works Department (PWD) and other organizations are working together to improve the drainage system. Special teams have also been formed to monitor key areas during the rainy season and take immediate action on complaints.
