Defence Ministry official found dead in Delhi; family accuses husband, in-laws of harassment

A30-year-old assistant section officer (ASO) working with the Ministry of Defence was found dead at her residence in Dwarka on Friday, police said.

According to her family, she was three months pregnant when the incident occurred. Police said the incident was reported around 4.20pm on Friday after taking place at about 4pm.

Argument with husband

Police staff immediately reached the scene and took possession of the body before informing the concerned SDM. The body was later shifted to the DDU Hospital mortuary in accordance with the prescribed procedure, DCP (Dwarka) Kushal Pal Singh said. He added that the deceased had got married in April and was posted as an ASO with the Ministry of Defence.

Senior police officers said an enquiry revealed that the woman locked herself in a room and was later found dead while her husband was present in the house. The door was opened with the help of another key. The husband allegedly told the police that the two had an argument, following which she locked herself in the room.

Police said the woman’s pregnancy could only be confirmed through the post-mortem report.

What did the family members say?

According to police, the family initially appeared before the concerned executive magistrate and gave their statements in writing. They did not mention any suspicion or allege wrongdoing by the in-laws at the time. The DCP said the woman’s parents later approached the SDM again on Saturday, alleging harassment by her husband and in-laws.

Following the complaint and subsequent inquiry, police registered a case under Sections 85 and 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Section 85 relates to cruelty by a husband or his relatives, while Section 108 deals with abetment of suicide.

Further investigation into the matter is in progress, and appropriate action will be taken on the basis of the evidence and facts that emerge during the course of the investigation, the police said.
