Belagavi: A big case of fraud has come to light in the name of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Here the thugs used a deepfake video of the minister and defrauded an elderly person of Rs 7.9 lakh. The fraudsters had promised to earn huge profits in a short time by investing in the stock market.
76 year old Prakash Gubbi, a resident of the city, has become the victim of this fraud. In this case, a case has been registered in the cyber crime police station against Adarsh Anand of Kolhapur and Damodar of Buldhana, Maharashtra. According to the complaint given to the police, the thugs had run an advertisement using a deepfake video of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. In this, a lure was given to earn huge profits in a short time by investing in the stock market.
Prakash Gubbi clicked the link of this advertisement and filled his information. Shortly thereafter, the accused called him and instigated him to invest.
Initially he transferred Rs 16,500 through PhonePe. After this, luring them with more profits, the fraudsters got them to transfer a total of Rs 7.9 lakh to their accounts in different installments through RTGS. After taking the money the fraudsters lost contact with him. When Prakash asked for his money back, the accused said that more investments would have to be made to get back the previous money and profits. After this Prakash realized that he had been cheated and lodged a complaint with the police.
