The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) management is reportedly preparing for a ruthless squad overhaul ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction. Following a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign that saw the team fail to reach the playoffs, franchise officials are looking to shed underperforming assets and free up crucial auction funds.
CSK spent heavily on several acquisitions in the previous auction, but their returns during the 2026 season were highly underwhelming. By releasing these players, CSK looks to free up a significant purse amount to rebuild their squad balance in the upcoming mini-auction.
Here are the four players CSK is likely to release before the hammer goes down for IPL 2027.
Prashant Veer (₹14.20 Crore)
The biggest talking point of CSK’s previous auction strategy was the massive ₹14.20 crore investment in Prashant Veer. The left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder was acquired for a massive fee as a potential long-term successor to Ravindra Jadeja. However, Veer underperformed significantly on the big stage, scoring just 90 runs in 6 matches and failing to make an impact with the ball. Freeing up Veer’s heavy price tag is a primary target for the management.
Rahul Chahar (₹5.20 Crore)
CSK brought in experienced leg-spinner Rahul Chahar for ₹5.20 crore to add bite to their middle-overs bowling. Unfortunately, the leg-spinner had a highly forgettable stint. He was handed only a single match during the entire season against the Punjab Kings, where he went wicketless while conceding 46 runs in his 4 overs. Holding onto a ₹5.20 crore benchwarmer makes little financial sense when the team needs active contributors.
Matt Henry (₹2.00 Crore)
New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry was purchased for ₹2.00 crore to provide early breakthroughs. Instead, the Kiwi pacer faced heavy criticism from experts and former selectors for being too expensive. He leaked runs heavily throughout his spells, finishing the season with an economy rate of 11.52. CSK will likely seek a more reliable overseas fast bowler to replace him.
Matthew Short (₹1.50 Crore)
Australian all-rounder Matthew Short was acquired for ₹1.50 crore but struggled to break into or cement a role in the playing XI. The Australian featured in only 3 matches over the course of the tournament, scoring just 60 runs. Given the premium value of overseas slots in an IPL roster, CSK cannot afford to waste a foreign spot on a player who doesn’t feature regularly in the starting lineup
