Chennai Metro: Set to Transform MRTS Stations for a Better Commuting Experience

chennai Metro Rail is gearing up to take charge of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) in the near future.

The first step in this transformative move involves a meticulous examination of MRTS stations to explore ways to enhance their infrastructure.

Although the official agreement between the State government and Southern Railway is pending, the preliminary groundwork for station upgrades has already commenced, as reported by The Hindu.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials have initiated inspections at MRTS stations to assess potential improvements and additional facilities. Pending approval, the station enhancement project will be initiated.

“We have already inspected two stations – Thirumayilai and Tiruvallikeni – as a pilot study. Our next step is to engage an agency for an in-depth analysis, guiding us on how to upgrade each station. The envisioned changes encompass everything from lighting and security to passenger amenities, aiming to elevate these stations to CMRL standards,” revealed a CMRL official to The Hindu.

While the transition process will be gradual, initially, the Railways will continue operating trains for a year. This is due to the anticipated year-long duration required for station upgrades after receiving the green light from CMRL.

“The ultimate goal is not only to enhance the stations but also to improve associated amenities. Plans are underway to upgrade systems and introduce air-conditioned coaches, promising a vastly improved commuting experience on MRTS trains once the entire process is finalized,” emphasized another official.
