Chaturmas 2026: In Sanatan Dharma, the time of Chaturmas is considered very sacred. This time is considered very special and best from the point of view of spiritual practice, because during this time Lord of the World Shri Hari Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra, hence this time is not considered auspicious for auspicious and auspicious works like marriage, engagement, naming ceremony, Mundan Sanskar and house warming. After this, the Lord wakes up from Yoganidra on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, after which auspicious and auspicious works are started again. This year Chaturmas is starting from Devshayani Ekadashi on 25th July, which will end on Devuthani Ekadashi on 20th November. It is now the beginning of Chaturmas and marriages are going on. After this, there will be a break of four months on all auspicious works including marriage.
Why marriages and auspicious works do not take place in Chaturmas?
According to Sanatan Shastras, during the four months of Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu leaves the responsibility of the world and rests. It is believed that when God is in Yoga Nidra, doing auspicious work is not as fruitful. This is the reason why auspicious and auspicious works are stopped during this period. This is the time of rainy season and then autumn. There is a risk of diseases due to changing weather.
The sages made this rule keeping in mind not only religious reasons but also health. Chaturmas has been described in the scriptures as a time for introspection and meditation.
