Why is it called Vaikuntha of the earth?
Calling Badrinath Dham the Vaikuntha of the earth is not just a belief, but a belief linked to deep religious faith and mythology. In the scriptures, Badrinath Dham has been considered as Vaikuntha of the earth i.e. the abode of Lord Vishnu on earth. It is believed that Lord Vishnu had performed rigorous penance here in Satyayuga. This place is so dear to him that it is considered his actual residence. It is said in the scriptures, there are many pilgrimage sites in the sky, earth and underworld, but there was no pilgrimage like Badrinath before and there will never be one. Just by visiting here one gets freedom from the bondage of birth and death. According to the legend, when Lord Vishnu was doing penance, Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badari (plum) tree to protect him from the sun and rain. Due to this dedication of the mother, this place was named Badrinath.
