The rescue operation lasted for five and a half hours

Three people were safely rescued from the debris, while two others died. Hospital authorities at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, confirmed that both the victims were brought dead to the hospital. The incident took place at plot number 28/9 near Hotel The Fern. Police, administrative officials, fire brigade personnel and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) launched a search and rescue operation after the building collapsed.

Mayor raised questions on renovation work

Chandigarh Mayor Saurav Joshi said on Saturday that around five workers were trapped inside when the building collapsed during renovation work. “Three people trapped inside have been rescued safely; they have suffered minor injuries, have been admitted to hospital and given medical aid. However, two people are still trapped inside,” Joshi said.

He said the NDRF, police administration and fire department were jointly carrying out the rescue operation using special equipment to lift the concrete slab. Joshi further said that in view of the rainy season, the administration should stop the renovation work at such times.

Did the accident happen due to structural flaws?

MPS Chawla, president of Chandigarh Industrial Association, said, “We learned that a co-working space was operated inside on a rented basis, so workers were also employed there. But this incident probably happened due to structural deficiencies. It is also not raining. We will know more after the official report comes. Three or four have already been taken out by ambulance, and two others are said to be still trapped inside.”

Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal said that all agencies are making every possible effort to rescue the stranded people and expressed hope that everyone will be evacuated safely.

Earlier, after the building collapse, teams of police, administrative officials and fire brigade reached the spot and started the debris removal and search operation. NDRF later joined this operation. (ANI)
