New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday said that over 12 lakh households have availed the self-enumeration facility successfully for the Census 2027 first phase, This included house listing and housing census in the last 15 days. With the conclusion of the exercise, a month-long field operation for the housing listing and housing Census will start from tomorrow in eight states and Union Territories.
As per the Centre, officials will start enumeration in Karnataka, Goa, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Odisha, and Sikkim, along with the NDMC area and Delhi Cantonment Board in the National Capital Territory. They will conduct house-to-house visits to put forth 33 notified questions to house owners and collect data.
After officials reach their homes, residents will be required to provide a self-enumeration ID (SE ID) to the enumerator. On the other hand, household, which did not opt for self-enumeration will be covered by enumerators during house visits.
Self-Enumeration facility introduced for the first time
“The Self-Enumeration (SE) facility, introduced in Census, has received an encouraging response from the public. As part of the digital approach adopted for Census 2027, so far around 12 lakh households have successfully availed the Self-Enumeration facility through the official portal (se.census.gov.in),” the government statement said.
The 16th census of India is being carried out by the government in digital exercise, while retaining the door-to-door enumeration framework. Notably, nearly 32 lakh enumerators will use a mobile application to collect data, ensuring higher accuracy and faster processing.
Next phase of rollout from April 16
The next phase of rollout will start on April 16. The same will be conducted in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. The process will be continued on till April 30. “Further, in Bihar, the 15-day Self-Enumeration period will commence from April 17, 2026 and continue till May 1, 2026, followed by field operations from May 2 to May 31, 2026,” the statement added further.
