K Annamalai News: The reason behind leaving BJP. What was the biggest difference of opinion between Annamalai and the party leadership? Without Modi factor and BJP organization, will Annamalai be able to create his independent political identity in Tamil Nadu? How can Annamalai’s new political strategy affect the 2031 elections amid the rising popularity of Chief Minister Vijay?
Annamalai New Political Party: Politics of South India has always been known for its distinct temperament and Dravidian identity. Where traditional parties have dominated for decades, a former IPS officer has taken a big decision to choose his own path. K. was a prominent face of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu. Annamalai has resigned from the party and is now going to start his own political movement. But the biggest question is that without the face of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the strong structure of a national party, will Annamalai, popularly known as ‘Singham’, be able to solve the complex political mathematics of Tamil Nadu on his own?
Why was there disillusionment with BJP?
Annamalai leaving BJP is not a decision taken overnight. In his resignation submitted to BJP National President Nitin Naveen, he has clarified that he had been having ideological differences with the top leadership of the party for the last 18 months. The biggest controversy was regarding the alliance with AIADMK.
Annamalai clearly believed that BJP should stand on its own in Tamil Nadu and end its dependence on Dravidian parties. The effect of his strategy was that in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections (without AIADMK), BJP’s vote share reached about 11 percent in the state. Despite this, when the Delhi high command nominated AIADMK leader E.K. Palanisamy (EPS) (who had reportedly set a condition for Annamalai’s sidelining), Annamalai thought it best to bid a respectable farewell.

The changing political mathematics of Tamil Nadu and the results of 2026
The results of Tamil Nadu’s 2026 assembly elections have proved that there was a huge anti-incumbency wave in the state. In these elections, actor Vijay’s new party ‘Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’ (TVK) has created history by winning 108 seats. At the same time, the ruling DMK alliance was reduced to 73 seats and the AIADMK-BJP (AIADMK+) alliance got only 53 seats (in which BJP got only 1 seat).
These results show that the people of Tamil Nadu were tired of the traditional politics that had been going on for a long time and were looking for a stronger alternative. Vijay filled this void by taking youth, women and first-time voters into his fold.
Can Annamalai win the elections alone?
Annamalai’s path without a Modi face is certainly full of challenges, but she has a strong political capital of her own:
- Personal Popularity and Support: Annamalai’s identity is no longer limited to being just a former BJP leader. Despite losing the Coimbatore Lok Sabha seat, he had secured more than 4.47 lakh votes on his own, which shows his personal political hold. His ‘En Man, En Makkan’ (My soil, my people) journey has connected him with rural and youth voters across the state.
- Common man’s politics: Annamalai has announced that his new organization will be for every common man, farmer and professional who is fed up with the politics of the elite class. He is an ‘A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is also starting ‘Centre for Ethics and Politics’, where youth will be given training in politics.
- Biggest obstacle – Chief Minister Vijay: The road ahead will not be easy for Annamalai as he and Chief Minister Vijay have the same target voter group – youth, anti-establishment voters and the middle class. If Vijay’s government lives up to its promises, the political ground for Annamalai may shrink further.
Future strategy: Eye on 2031
Annamalai is not dreaming of winning the elections in a hurry. He has made it clear that instead of directly announcing a political party, he is first starting a ‘movement’, which will take the form of a party in the future. According to party sources, he had also sought seven years’ time from the BJP leadership to become a regional power. Now his real goal is to create a strong and independent grassroots structure for the 2031 elections.
Annamalai’s separation from the BJP is a major strategic loss for the national party, as he had given a new and aggressive look to the organization. Annamalai’s journey will certainly be difficult without the ‘Modi factor’, but his impeccable image in politics, ideological clarity and ability to communicate directly with the youth make him a horse for a long race. If he succeeds in connecting his movement with the culture and real issues of the state, he can become a regional option in Tamil Nadu politics, whose impact will be felt for a decade to come.
