Bharatiya Janata Party has once again proved its dominance in Gujarat politics. In the results of local body elections 2026 that came on Tuesday, BJP gave a big blow to the opposition by registering a landslide victory in all 15 municipal corporations. This big electoral contest before the assembly elections was considered to decide the political direction of the state.

From municipal corporations to district panchayats and taluka panchayats, the BJP has shown its organizational strength with a strong performance in both urban and rural areas. Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) could not perform as expected in this election. With around 4.18 crore voters and more than 9,200 seats, this election is being counted among the biggest local electoral exercises in Gujarat.

BJP captures 15 out of 15 municipal corporations

Voting was held for 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats and 260 taluka panchayats on Sunday. The results came out on Tuesday, in which BJP won all 15 municipal corporations. In Ahmedabad, BJP won 158 out of 192 seats. BJP’s dominance in rural areas also

Not only in Municipal Corporation, BJP also performed brilliantly in rural local bodies. Of the total 1,090 seats in 34 district panchayats, BJP won 568 seats. Whereas Congress got 77 seats and other candidates got 30 seats. BJP won 2,397 seats out of 5,234 seats in 260 taluka panchayats. Congress got 591 seats here, while other candidates won 329 seats. This demonstration shows that BJP’s influence is not limited to cities only, but extends deeply to villages.

Elections for the first time in 9 new municipal corporations

A special feature of the elections this time was that voting took place for the first time in 9 new municipal corporations. These include Navsari, Gandhidham, Morbi, Vapi, Anand, Nadiad, Mehsana, Porbandar and Surendranagar. BJP further strengthened its political hold by taking a strong lead in these new municipal corporations also. These results are considered very important for the upcoming assembly elections.

Elections held amidst new rules of OBC reservation

These elections were conducted under the revised rules of Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation. Due to this, delimitation and reorganization of wards was done in many districts. Due to the new system, a major change was also seen in election strategies. BJP, Congress and AAP were in the main contest, while AIMIM had also fielded candidates in many constituencies. Despite this, BJP’s massive lead gave a clear message that the strength of the organization and booth level remains its biggest weapon.

Big signal before assembly elections

These results are being seen as a big morale boost for the BJP before the Gujarat Assembly elections to be held next year. Local body elections are often considered an indication of the public mood. In such a situation, victory over 15 municipal corporations is considered very important politically for BJP. On the other hand, for Congress and AAP these results have become a matter of introspection. In Gujarat politics, this victory is not only being considered as the success of the local bodies, but also a sign of strong preparation of BJP before the big election battle of 2027.
