Examines the emotional scars of Partition through a family’s story, Sunny Deol has said. Calling a film about human values and relationships, Deol said it champions the belief that “a mother is above all religions and faiths.”
“The film revolves around a motherly figure. The core message is that a mother is a religion in herself, and there is nothing greater than her. The biggest religion is humanity. That is the core of this film,” the actor told PTI.
Speaking about his family’s Partition memories, Deol said stories shared by his grandparents during his childhood left a lasting impression on him. “There was fear in those stories, but they also spoke of people helping one another. Those stories stayed with me.”
Addressing comparisons with over the film’s Pakistan backdrop, Deol said stories should rise above political interpretations.
“We are actors and filmmakers. We choose stories and tell them. We don’t want to take them into politics,” he added.
Drawing a distinction between the two films, Deol said told a love story set amid Partition, while delves into the struggles of families uprooted from their homes and the trauma of migration.
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and backed by Aamir Khan Productions, the film was previously titled . The film stars Preity Zinta and Deol in the lead role.
