Delhi Metro may soon launch FASTag based smart parking at Jamia Millia Islamia and Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh stations. Passengers will get UPI, NCMC and other digital payment options, while CCTV and automatic barriers will enhance security.
The parking experience may soon change completely for millions of passengers traveling by Delhi Metro. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is preparing to develop a modern smart parking system at Jamia Millia Islamia and Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh metro stations of the Magenta Line. The objective of this initiative is to provide fast, convenient and completely digital parking facility to the passengers.
Under this proposed project, with an estimated cost of around Rs 1.26 crore, parking infrastructure will be developed, operated and maintained. In the new system, passengers will not need to pay in cash. Parking fee can be paid through digital means like FASTag, UPI, National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), debit card, credit card and e-wallet.
Automatic barrier and cashless system will provide better experience
Automatic boom barriers will be installed in the proposed smart parking system, which will control the entry and exit of vehicles. This will reduce the time taken in parking and traffic management will also be better. According to the proposal, the charge for car parking can be kept at Rs 30 for 6 hours and Rs 50 for 12 hours. Whereas for two-wheelers, a fee of Rs 15 for 6 hours and Rs 25 for 12 hours is proposed. Monthly parking pass facility can also be provided for regular commuters.
Special attention to disabled passengers and safety
An important feature of this project is to ensure better accessibility for passengers with disabilities. Special parking spaces will be reserved near the station entrance, ramps and lifts, so that they do not face any problem in accessing metro services.
CCTV cameras, electronic payment systems and digital information boards will be installed in parking areas to strengthen security and convenience. Important information like parking charges, available spaces and emergency contact numbers will be shown on these display boards. Officials believe the smart parking project will improve passenger experience, promote digital payments and encourage more people to adopt public transport. If the plan is implemented on time, it could prove to be an important step towards strengthening the digital infrastructure of Delhi Metro.
