Himachal Government has appointed senior IAS officer Sanjay Gupta as the new Chief Secretary of Himachal Pradesh. According to the notification issued by the Personnel Department, the Governor has appointed 1988 batch IAS officer Sanjay Gupta, who was working as Additional Chief Secretary (Town and Country Planning and Housing), as Chief Secretary with immediate effect.

Got important responsibility just four days before retirement

The notification said that Sanjay Gupta was already holding the additional charge of the post of Chief Secretary. Now in public interest, he has been made the regular Chief Secretary of Himachal Pradesh Government. This order has been issued by M. Sudha Devi, Secretary, Department of Personnel, on 26 May 2026.

It is noteworthy that Sanjay Gupta is going to retire on 31 May 2026 and he has been given this important responsibility just four days before his retirement. Discussion regarding this has also intensified in political and administrative circles.

Many allegations were made against Sanjay Gupta during his tenure.

Sanjay Gupta was born on 5 June 1966 and is counted among the senior IAS officers of Himachal Pradesh cadre. During his tenure, many allegations were made against him and for some time there was a demand to remove him from the post. At the same time, Sanjay Gupta also came in front of the media and accused many IAS officers of corruption.

After the retirement of former Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena in October 2025, the Sukhu government had given the additional charge of Chief Secretary to Sanjay Gupta. Now the government has appointed him to this post on regular basis.
