Assam Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has welcomed the decisive initiative taken by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma towards eradicating narcotics through a massive eradication campaign. According to a press release, senior state BJP spokesperson Brojen Mahant praised the Chief Minister for his steadfast leadership in intensifying the state’s campaign against drug trafficking and abuse.
The Chief Minister formally inaugurated the narcotics destruction program in the presence of Finance Minister Jayant Malla Barua and Barkhetri Assembly constituency MLA Narayan Deka at the premises of 14th Assam Police Battalion at Daulashal in Nalbari on Sunday. Narcotics worth Rs 472.51 crore were destroyed during the programme.
Assam BJP informed through a press release issued from its headquarters Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan that similar district level narcotics destruction programs will be organized in the respective district police headquarters across Assam as part of the statewide initiative led by Assam Police. Addressing the gathering at Daulashal, the Chief Minister said that narcotics worth more than Rs 1,000 crore are seized every year in Assam. He confirmed that Assam Police is continuously pursuing drug smugglers and assured that the operation against drug trade will be further intensified in the coming days.
Drugs worth crores will be destroyed in 10 days
Sarma also announced that a state-of-the-art drug incineration machine provided by the Government of India has been installed at Daulashal. Over the next ten days, the facility will be used to destroy the seized narcotics, which include 58.88 kg of heroin worth Rs 118 crore; 37,796.34 kg ganja worth Rs 189 crore; 229,449 bottles of cough syrup worth Rs 23 crore; 496,712 tablets/capsules worth Rs 20 crore; 79.77 kg opium worth Rs 4 crore; 39.07 kg morphine worth Rs 40 crore; 1,870,922 methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 75 crore; 3.2 kg of methamphetamine worth Rs 5 crore; 0.05 kg cocaine worth Rs 24 crore; 4.62 kg opium plants worth Rs 2.5 crore; And 9.49 kg of poppy straw worth Rs 2 crore is involved.
Drugs worth Rs 3,227 crore seized in last 5 years
Highlighting the achievements of the state’s anti-drug campaign, the Chief Minister pointed out that in the last five years, Assam Police has registered about 3,300 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and seized narcotics worth more than Rs 3,227 crore. He further said that under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Government of India has established a strong inter-state coordination mechanism to strengthen the nationwide campaign against drug trafficking.
The CM also said that after the formation of the BJP government in West Bengal, the number of criminals using Assam as a transit corridor to smuggle drugs to other states has declined. Reiterating the government’s determination to eliminate the scourge of narcotics from Assam and the nation, Sarma stressed that the BJP government is fully committed to building a drug-free society and warned that the strictest legal action will continue against all those involved in the illegal narcotics trade.
