Bhojshala Vagdevi Temple
Indore bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court has declared the disputed Bhojshala site as Vagdevi temple. The court also said that this structure is a temple and Muslims can ask for some other land for the mosque. The bench of Justices Vijay Kumar Shukla and Alok Awasthi quashed the order in which Muslims were allowed to offer namaz at this place. Now the question arises that who is Vagdevi, about whose temple controversy arose?
First let us understand what was the dispute? In fact, according to the arrangements made by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in 2003, Hindus and Muslims have been offering namaz on Tuesday and Friday respectively. The Hindu side had approached the High Court seeking special rights of worship on this premises. The Hindu petitioners claimed that the site was originally a temple of Goddess Vagdevi, while the Muslim side said that it was a mosque. A Jain petitioner also claimed that the structure was a Jain temple.
Reference given to ASI report of 1904
The court had asked all parties to submit their objections, suggestions and recommendations regarding the 2200-page ASI report. This report was prepared after a scientific survey of this 11th century site between March and June 2024. It was told in the report that this structure was built using the remains of earlier temples and the structure of the mosque which is standing there was built much later.

Advocates Vishnu Shankar Jain and Vinay Joshi, representing the Hindu side, along with petitioner Ashish Goyal, argued that Bhojshala was originally a temple and sought special worship rights for Hindus at the site. The ASI report of 1904 was cited, in which the idol of Vagdevi which is now kept in the British Museum was identified. He argued that the main features of the mosque are not present in this structure.
Who is Vaagdevi?
Vagdevi is said to be the presiding deity of knowledge, speech, intelligence, art, literature and music. Actually, she is a form of Mother Saraswati. According to the Vedas, if we look at the meaning of the word Vaagdevi, then Vak has been said to mean speech and everyone knows the meaning of Devi. That is, she has been called the goddess of speech and is considered to be the embodiment of Brahma.
