Bengaluru Police Books Over 700 Motorists For Drunk Driving Before New Year 2024

Bengaluru Traffic Police has charged 717 vehicle owners for drunk driving across the metro city. This comes as part of a special drive by the police department which began on December 21 to improve public safety and ensure adherence to traffic laws.

During this time, the officials conducted surprise checks of the riders drinking and driving by placing checkpoints all across the city, as per a press release by the police department.

Across different divisions, the traffic police inspected more than 27,280 vehicles from December 21 to December 30. This resulted in 717 riders and drivers being charged for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. It was verified by checking the blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Those found with more BAC levels than the legal limit were booked. It is to be noted that anything beyond 30 mg/100 ml is not legal while in control of a vehicle.

After inspecting 4,381 cars, the traffic police in the South division alone filed 167 cases against intoxicated drivers till December 29. After 154 vehicles were inspected, 30 cases were reported at the traffic police checkpoints at Kumaraswamy Layout, representing the highest positive rate of over 19.5 percent.

Out of all the traffic police stations in the south, the bounds of Thalaghattapura traffic police station had the highest percentage of positivity. Almost 44 percent of the drivers screened had BAC levels over the legal limit, despite the fact that just 41 cars were checked between December 20 and December 29. Of them, 18 incidents were reported.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police carried out a similar drive to maintain law and order in the national capital on New Year’s Eve. The police department deployed 2,500 personnel for smooth movement of vehicles. Over 10,000 officers will be stationed on the ground, according to the police, to put an end to hooliganism and moving offenses.
