West Bengal Baruipur Rape Murder Case: The silence of Tuesday’s midnight in Baruipur, West Bengal was suddenly shattered by the sound of bullets. The time was around 12:45 in the night. A special team of Baruipur police station was moving towards Suryapur with Prabhash Mandal, the main accused in the rape and murder of a 12-year-old innocent girl. The aim of the police was to understand the sequence of events of that dreadful incident (crime reconstruction). But as soon as the team reached the spot where the victim’s body was found, the suspense floating in the air turned into a bloody encounter. Just before the reconstruction began, accused Mandal suddenly pounced on a policeman and snatched his service weapon. He fired one round at the police team and tried to escape taking advantage of the darkness. But the police responded immediately; When the sound of bullets stopped, Mandal was lying on the ground soaked in blood. When taken to the hospital, the doctors declared him dead.

The script of this bloody encounter had been written a few days earlier on July 4, when an innocent girl suddenly went missing. The truth that came out after this shook the entire area. The girl’s body was found brutally stuffed inside a sack in a deserted pond of Baruipur. This gruesomeness broke the patience of the local people. Angry people completely blocked the Baruipur-Jaynagar road, burnt tires on the roads and vandalized police vehicles. The public had only one demand – the culprits should be hanged immediately. To stop the public anger, the police took immediate action and arrested three people including Prabhash Mandal and formed a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Hours after the girl’s body was found, an unruly and angry mob surrounded a local named Indrajit Mandal on suspicion. Even before the police could investigate, the mob crossed all limits of cruelty and lynched him. What was revealed later left everyone stunned. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari himself confirmed that Inderjit Mandal was completely innocent based on the preliminary investigation by the police. He had nothing to do with this heinous crime.
