The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has played down the latest speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, with secretary Devajit Saikia insisting that the veteran opener’s performances remain the key factor in determining his place in the Indian team.
Speaking after the BCCI’s review meeting in Mumbai on Thursday, Saikia pushed back against reports suggesting that Rohit could be nearing the end of his international career.
The former India captain’s future had emerged as one of the major talking points ahead of the meeting, particularly with the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching.
“He (Rohit) is playing superbly in all matches. He scored 130 in the last match he played. So, what more do you want? Why is there speculation? I don’t want to give fodder to speculation,” Saikia said.
BCCI clarifies purpose of review meeting
The meeting was attended by head coach Gautam Gambhir, ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, BCCI president Mithun Manhas and Saikia. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, whose current tenure is scheduled to conclude in October, was not present.
Saikia made it clear that Thursday’s gathering was not a selection meeting and was instead focused on reviewing India’s recent performances and planning for the year ahead.
“So, today we did not have any selection meeting. We had a routine meeting, like we have frequent meetings after the interval of a good three months. We had a meeting today with the head coach, the head of cricket, COE, as well as two of the captains, the T20 captain for us, as well as the Test and ODI captain, Shubman,” he said.
“We basically discussed how our team performed in England and Ireland, basically, and also what we are going to do in the next one year. So, the roadmap has been prepared, and we’ll be doing some exercises so that we have a very good performance in 2027,” he added.
