Mahela Jayawardene on Rohit Sharma Fitness: The fitness of former Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma remains a matter of tension for the fans. Actually, BCCI has selected him on the basis of fitness for the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. It has been clearly stated by the board that Rohit will be able to be a part of this series only when he is completely fit. Rohit Sharma was recently out of the field for three weeks of IPL 2026 due to hamstring injury. Due to his injury, questions were being raised on his availability. But now Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has removed all the tension by giving a big update on Rohit’s fitness.
Big update on Rohit Sharma’s fitness
Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene said in the press conference, ‘According to me and our medical team, Rohit is 100% fit. We were a little cautious in the first match after returning from hamstring injury. Now he is being fielded as an impact sub just because of the team combination. Rohit is a team player and he understands this completely. It is clear from this statement of the coach that Rohit is now fully prepared and there is no worry about his fitness. Playing as an impact player is not his lack of fitness but is part of the team’s strategy.
However, Rohit Sharma will have to pass BCCI’s fitness test before the ODI series. According to TOI, BCCI is worried about Rohit’s fitness. In fact, during Rohit’s injury, he did not report to BCCI’s Center of Excellence (CoE) in three weeks. In such a situation, there is concern whether his body will be able to bear the load of high performance sports or not. 50 overs have to be fielded in ODI. There is no option of impact player in ODI cricket like in IPL. In such a situation, only BCCI will take the final decision on Rohit’s fitness.
8 matches played so far in IPL 2026
Due to injury, Rohit Sharma has been able to play only 8 matches so far in this season of IPL. During this period he has scored 283 runs at an average of 40.42. Rohit has scored these runs at a strike rate of 160.79, which includes 2 half-centuries. That means, not many big innings have been seen from his bat. Due to which his team is already out of the race for the playoffs. In such a situation, Rohit’s eyes will be on playing a big innings in the last league match.
