Sunny Deol and Shabana Azmi starrer Batwara 1947 trailer released today, Tuesday, July 28, 2026. The film also stars Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal, and Karan Deol and is set for an Independence Day release on August 14, 2026.

The trailer opens with the slogan “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” where Sunny Deol, playing a Muslim man, congratulates his wife, Preity Zinta, for getting Independence. However, the happiness is short-lived as a person makes Sunny understand that India is the country for Hindus. With the rising riots, he realizes the country will be divided into two, and he, with his family, will have to move to Pakistan.
Sunny Deol gets into his powerful action mode as the heart-wrenching fights target his family as they hurry to leave the place, revisiting the horrors of partition through a deeply human lens. However, the story takes a new turn as Sunny gets allotted a new haveli where a Hindu matriarch, Shabana Azmi, already lives. Sunny asks her to leave, but she refuses, and he lets her stay, treating her as a mother.
Shabana, being a Hindu, performs aarti and all the rituals, which doesn’t sit well with the intruders who threaten Sunny, but he vows to protect Shabana. As intruders break in to demolish the temple as Shabana prays, Sunny roars, saying, “Mandir Todna Islam Nahi Hai”, and this very dialogue itself raises the excitement and anticipation for the partition-era film.
As the communal tension rises, Sunny steps in to fight for the right, and his thoughts echo as he fights to protect Shabana. When questioned for fighting for a Hindu woman, he says she isn’t a Hindu woman, but she is a mother, and one should not differentiate her into Hindu and Muslim, because a mother is a mother whether Hindu or Muslim. He says that for every human, mother is the religion, and a child’s first cry is “Maa”.
The film doesn’t rely only on high-octane action; it beautifully focuses on the pain of separation, the strength of motherhood, and the resilience of the human spirit during one of history’s darkest chapters.
