Some kind of cricket action goes on throughout the year in almost every part of India. But this action will not be seen in the three big cricket stadiums in the coming days. Now we will have to wait for cricket or any kind of sports event in the 3 stadiums of Mumbai, Jaipur and Raipur, which have hosted many matches from international cricket to IPL. Taking action in the matter of misuse of ground water at three stadiums, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a temporary ban on sports events in these three stadiums.
On Friday, July 10, NGT in one of its orders imposed this ban on the stadiums of these three cities. These three stadiums are – DY Patil Stadium (Navi Mumbai), Sawai Mansingh Stadium (Jaipur) and Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium (Raipur). Out of this, in the stadium of Jaipur itself, during the IPL season last year, at the age of 14, Vaibhav Suryavanshi had created history by scoring a century in 34 balls. He had scored a century on this ground this year also. IPL champion RCB played 2 matches in Raipur.
This decision has been given due to the use of ground water for the maintenance of these three stadiums. NGT said in its order that the operators of these stadiums did not send their reply despite several notices from the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) and the Tribunal. Only after this NGT has given this interim order.
It said that groundwater or fresh water was used instead of water treated from sewage treatment plants (STP) for the maintenance of cricket grounds. Not only this, there is also an allegation of not storing ground water or preparing rain water harvesting system in all three stadiums. Further hearing in this case has been scheduled on August 17.
