The Assam government is set to present its budget for 2026-27 in the Assembly on Friday. The ruling BJP has expressed confidence that this financial blueprint will accelerate the state’s development, fulfill key election promises and lay a strong foundation for long-term development.
Friday is the fifth day of the Assam Assembly budget session, during which the state budget is likely to be presented. Before the proceedings, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reached the Assembly.
Ahead of the budget presentation, the Assam Chief Minister’s Office posted on Twitter, “#AssamBudget2026 is here. A vision of a stronger, more prosperous and future-ready Assam.”
In a separate post on Twitter, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “Team Assam is ready to present #AssamBudget2026.”
This budget comes at a time when the state government has tried to project Assam as an emerging investment destination. A day earlier, six bills aimed at improving ease of doing business and promoting tourism were also introduced in the Assembly.
Keep an eye on foreign investment also
Speaking ahead of the Budget, Assam Minister Bimal Bora said the recent visit of the Japanese Prime Minister has strengthened hopes of more foreign investment in the state, especially in its industrial sector.
“The Japanese Prime Minister’s visit to Assam is a very good and encouraging visit for us and for the entire country. The people of Assam are also eagerly waiting for the results of this visit, because Assam is now moving very fast to develop our industrialization ecosystem. If Japan and other neighboring countries are willing to invest in various programs to develop our industrial ecosystem, then it is definitely good news for us…”
BJP MLAs have big expectations from the budget
On the budget, Assam minister Biswajit Daimary said it will reflect the commitments made by the BJP government and focus on schemes aimed at the overall development of the state.
“This budget incorporates the promises made by our Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as well as the commitments outlined in the manifesto. It will address various schemes aimed at the development of Assam. Although many such development initiatives are already underway, others are yet to be completed…”
BJP MLA Arup Kumar Dey said the budget will bring clarity on sector-wise allocations and highlight the government’s priorities in key departments.
“The budget will be presented for every department and office. We will get details of the allocations made for each department – in particular, what the government plans to do with respect to sports, culture, and handloom and textile sectors – this will be known only after the budget is passed today. I am hopeful that after this budget is passed, Assam will envision a new future…”
Expressing similar optimism, BJP MLA Pulak Gohain said he hoped the budget would create new opportunities for the state.
“Today our Finance Minister will present the state budget. I am hopeful that this budget will bring new hopes for Assam and open new avenues of development.”
BJP MLA Bhupen Kumar Bora said the budget is expected to translate the government’s vision into a long-term development agenda for the state.
“We are hopeful that the budget that our government will present today will take the BJP government forward for the next five years in line with the vision of our Chief Minister… The people of Assam will definitely have expectations given the kind of majority they have given to the BJP this time. I am confident that our Finance Minister and the Chief Minister will together present a budget that will help in building a strong foundation for the state in the coming five years.”
The budget is expected to outline the government’s fiscal priorities for the coming year, while detailing allocations for key sectors including infrastructure, industry, agriculture, education, healthcare and social welfare against the backdrop of the state’s push for higher investment and sustained economic growth.
