As soon as he assumed power in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has given a big financial gift to lakhs of government employees of the state. On Wednesday, the state government announced a direct increase of 2 percent in Dearness Allowance (DA). This decision will be considered effective from January 1, 2026. This step will directly increase the salary i.e. ‘take-home pay’ in the hands of employees in this era of inflation.
More money will come directly into the account
Till now, in Tamil Nadu, everyone from government officials to teachers were getting DA at the rate of 58 percent. According to the official statement issued by the Information and Public Relations Department, now this figure has been increased to 60 percent. This two percent jump will be calculated on the basic salary, which simply means that there will be a clear jump in the salary every month. To beat the rising inflation, this revision of salary has brought great relief to the employees.
16 lakh families will get direct benefits
The scope of this decision of the government is quite wide. Its benefits are not going to be limited to just the existing employees. About 16 lakh people of the state will directly benefit from this announcement. These include everyone from officers working in the secretariat to teachers teaching in remote schools. Apart from this, pensioners who have dedicated their lives to government service as well as family pensioners will also be paid at the increased rate. This additional amount will act as an important financial security cover for lakhs of families in meeting their daily expenses.
1230 crore burden on government treasury
Any major wage revision has a direct impact on the balance sheet of the state. This step of increasing DA by 2 percent will put an additional burden of Rs 1,230 crore annually on the exchequer of Tamil Nadu government. From a financial perspective, this is a big fiscal allocation. However, the government has made it clear that there will be no compromise with the welfare of the employees. The government will arrange necessary funds to compensate for this additional expenditure, so that the employees can get their rights without affecting the growth rate of the state.
