goalkeeper Emiliano “Emi” Martinez has cast fresh doubt over his international future after the Albiceleste lost the FIFA World Cup 2026 final to Spain 0-1 on Sunday, July 19, suggesting he may consider retiring from the national team following the heartbreaking defeat at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The 33-year-old earned his 67th cap in the final, playing every minute of Argentina’s World Cup campaign and keeping two clean sheets as the defending champions attempted to become the first team in 64 years to win back-to-back World Cup titles. However, Spain’s victory ended Argentina’s reign as world champions, a status they had held since lifting the trophy in Qatar in 2022, prompting an emotional response from one of the team’s senior leaders.
Taking to Instagram after the defeat, Martinez expressed his disappointment while hinting that his international journey could be nearing its end.
“I dreamt we’d win it again, I dreamt of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more,” Martinez wrote.
“The truth is, the pain is hard to explain. There are many things to reflect on and how to move forward, and if it’s time to step aside. I’m so sorry, I truly tried my best to help my country and my teammates,” he added.
Martinez has been one of Argentina’s most influential players during their recent golden era. He played a pivotal role in the country’s triumphant 2022 World Cup campaign, earning the prestigious Golden Glove award as the tournament’s best goalkeeper. His performances also saw him win the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the world’s best goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, in both 2023 and 2024.
Aston Villa career
At club level, Martinez remains under contract with Aston Villa until 2029 after joining from Arsenal in 2020. He also helped the Premier League club secure Europa League glory in May.
Despite his long-term deal at Villa Park, the goalkeeper has reportedly informed Juventus of his desire to join the Italian giants this summer. However, the Serie A club are yet to make an official offer, with any potential move expected to involve an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy.
Martinez’s comments also come at a time of uncertainty for Argentina. Veteran captain is expected to retire from international football, while head coach has indicated he could leave when his contract expires at the end of the year.
