According to the legend, in ancient times there was a king named Mahidhwaj. The king’s younger brother Vajradhwaj was very cruel and unrighteous. He was jealous of his elder brother. In this jealousy, one day at night, Vajradhwaj killed his elder brother and King Mahidhwaj. Then his body was buried under a wild Peepal tree. Due to untimely death, King Mahidhwaj became a ghost and started living on the same Peepal tree and started creating havoc.

One day a sage named Dhaumya passed by there. He saw the ghost and with the help of his spiritual powers came to know about his past. Then the sage brought down the ghost from the peepal tree and preached the knowledge of the afterlife. The merciful sage kept a fast on Apara Ekadashi to free the king from the ghost and offered all the fruits of his good deeds to the ghost. Due to the influence of this virtue, King Mahidhwaj was freed from the ghostly form and went to heaven in a divine body.
