It doesn’t matter what the beginning is like. It is important to know after that beginning who is moving forward and who is not. Better examples of this will hardly be found anywhere than in the world of sports. Every day a new example presents itself. One such unique sight was seen in North Sound of Antigua, where a new hero emerged in the first Test match between hosts West Indies and Sri Lanka. Name is Aamir Jangu. This West Indies batsman took charge of the team by scoring an excellent century on the third day of the match. This is the first century of Jangu’s test career.

On the second day of this test match, West Indies’ innings started after bowling out Sri Lanka for 308 runs in the first innings but the team lost 2 wickets till 97 runs. In such a situation, left-handed batsman Aamir Jangu entered at number four, who was playing only his second Test match. He pegged it down from one end, while 3 more wickets fell in front of his eyes. Half of West Indies’ batting had returned to the pavilion only for 168 runs.

Jangu scored a century as soon as he got the chance

This is where Aamir Jangu had a golden opportunity to prove himself and this 28 year old batsman did not disappoint. Jangu, along with team captain Roston Chase, handled the innings and scored his first Test half-century. Both of them had made a century partnership by the end of the second day’s play. Then on June 27, on the third day of the match, both of them came out to bat again and continued their work. Within no time, Aamir Jangu came close to his century and crossed the 100 mark for the first time in international cricket with a brilliant four.

Jangu, who was batting like a regular Test batsman, got the reward for his patience and hard work in the form of this century which came in 226 balls. Even after the century, he did not lose his focus immediately and while taking the innings forward, he not only gave the team lead over Sri Lanka but also took it beyond 350 runs. During this period, Captain Chase also completed his half-century. By the lunch break, both had made an unbeaten partnership of 188 runs, taking the team to 356 runs.

Why is this century special for Jangu?

This century was very special for Jangu because it came in only the third innings of his career. But it is not just this, it is more than that. At the age of 26 and a half, he made his Test debut against Pakistan in January 2025 and was out on zero in the very first innings. After staying for some time in the second innings, this batsman definitely scored 30 runs but after that he was not selected in the team for the next one and a half year. Jangu got a chance in this test match also because the team’s star wicketkeeper-batsman Shay Hope was out due to injury. Hope’s injury proved to be a boon for Jangu and now he has staked claim for his place.
