Advanced Micro Devices Inc. entered into a definitive $8.2 billion all-stock deal to acquire AI startup World Labs, bringing in pioneer Dr. Fei-Fei Li and her team.
- AMD agrees to buy World Labs for $8.2 billion in an all-stock transaction, targeted to close by year-end, subject to regulatory approval.
- Stanford computer scientist and World Labs founder Dr. Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to CEO Dr. Lisa Su.
- The purchase brings World Labs’ specialized “world models,” which construct 3D environments for applications in robotics, factories and scientific simulation.
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) on Monday announced the purchase of artificial intelligence startup World Labs in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion, aiming to strengthen its position against rival Nvidia Corp. (NVDA)
The transaction is expected to close by year-end, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
AMD stock eased about 4% on Monday, while NVDA stock gained about 1.8%.
Uniting Hardware And Software Talent
Founded by renowned Stanford University researcher and computer scientist Dr. Fei-Fei Li, World Labs brings together roughly 70 specialists and software expertise focused on spatial intelligence and “world models.”
The startup develops software that can generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive three-dimensional physical environments. These systems serve as foundational frameworks for advancing autonomous robotics, manufacturing automation, and complex scientific research.
As part of the definitive agreement, Li will join the chipmaker as executive vice president and chief scientist, directly reporting to AMD Chief Executive Officer Dr. Lisa Su.
“The more you understand end to end, the better system you are going to build,” Su said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. “That’s why we are acquiring World Labs—to have access to the world-class talent Fei-Fei has brought together and bring it together with AMD’s capabilities around hardware, software and systems.”
Accelerating The Compute Flywheel
The acquisition aligns with AMD’s broader strategy to deliver comprehensive data center offerings, combining chips, infrastructure, and software capabilities. The enterprise client market remains AMD’s primary revenue driver as tech infrastructure expands to support next-generation artificial intelligence applications.
Li noted that the venture’s expanding ambitions required access to significantly greater computing infrastructure.
“At this point, if we can join forces with AMD, we really are giving ourselves, AMD and the ecosystem an opportunity to accelerate the flywheel between software and hardware development,” Li said.
Market Dynamics And Competition
The acquisition comes during an intensive period of dealmaking across the semiconductor and artificial intelligence sectors. Market leader Nvidia recently agreed to acquire open-source platform Hugging Face in a deal valued at $13 billion.
While AMD remains second to Nvidia in the market for specialized AI accelerator chips, investor enthusiasm for its execution has surged, pushing the company’s valuation to roughly $1 trillion. Integrating World Labs’ spatial AI architecture is expected to help refine future hardware designs and expand the company’s range of open and proprietary AI model offerings for enterprise clients.
