According to the popular story, once upon a time a merchant named Mahodaya lived in a city. He always spoke the truth and also helped others. He was always ahead in religious activities also. Once when sir was going for some work, on the same road a sage was telling people the importance of Akshaya Tritiya.

When sir heard the importance of Akshaya Tritiya, he also stopped there. The sage said to the sir, ‘On Akshaya Tritiya, one gets the inexhaustible, i.e. complete, results of the auspicious works like donation, havan, worship etc. On this day, if any donation, havan, tarpan etc. is done for the ancestors, then it also brings auspicious results. His virtue also never ends.
Hearing the importance of Akshaya Tritiya, sir thought that he too would observe the fast on Akshaya Tritiya. When the festival of Akshaya Tritiya came, the sir offered prayers to his ancestors and gods on the banks of Ganga. Donated things like grains, food, clothes, curd, milk to the Brahmins. By doing this he experienced extreme happiness.
When the time came, sir died. In the next life he was born as a Kshatriya in Kushawatipuri. Even in this birth, he used to help people by doing charity. By observing Akshaya Tritiya fast, one can get all kinds of happiness even in the next birth. In this way he freed himself from the bondage of life and death and went to the abode of God.
