The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Jeetu, a resident of Babaicha village under Gegal police station area. After the video started circulating online, she lodged a complaint late Saturday evening. Police have identified the accused as Prakash Nath (23), Ravindra Nath (28), Ram Lal (23), Hemraj (24), Goru Nath (22), Vikram Nath (20), Devi Lal (43), Shayari (70) and Sugna (43).

“This video was uploaded online to spread fear in the society. A special team raided the houses of the accused and arrested them on Sunday morning,” a police officer said.

Police sources say that this violence took place due to resentment over Jitu’s marriage with a divorced woman. “A woman, who was earlier married to a man named Mahendra from Bir village, allegedly divorced him and married Jeetu. The woman’s former in-laws were demanding a settlement under the local ‘nata pratha’. Under this practice, the woman’s new partner has to pay money to her former husband,” sources said.

According to Jeetu’s complaint, he had gone with another person to collect wood from a farmhouse at around 9 am on Saturday morning. Then several accused came in a pickup truck, stopped him and forcibly took him away. She was allegedly taken to Bir village in Srinagar, where she was beaten and ill-treated. Jeetu also claimed that the accused demanded Rs 5 lakh from him and pressured him to call his family for money. Threatened to insult him further if his demand was not met.
