Airplane Facts: Why are the lights dim during takeoff and landing? 99% people don’t know the reason

For safety reasons the lights are dimmed during this time.

While traveling in an aeroplane, you must have noticed that the lights are dimmed before takeoff and landing. Most travelers consider this process to be a comfortable experience, but it is not. There are serious and security reasons behind this. Aircraft safety statistics show that most accidents occur during takeoff and landing. That is, one thing is clear that during landing and takeoff, there is maximum pressure on the pilot and crew. This is why the lights are dimmed during this period for safety reasons. Now let us understand the reason behind this.

When a person suddenly comes from bright light to darkness, there is darkness in front of his eyes. It takes time for the eyesight to become normal. That means it takes at least 5 to 20 minutes. If there is a sudden power failure in the plane, there will be complete darkness in the cabin. This means that it will be difficult for a passenger sitting in bright light to find his way.

To avoid such situations, the crew dims the lights in advance. So that passengers become accustomed to seeing in low light. If an emergency arises, you can see the things around you without any delay and find a way out.

It is important for the emergency exit to be clearly visible

There is a special kind of lighting on the emergency exit paths in the aircraft, it is made of such material which glows in the dark, that is, even if the electricity is completely cut off, these paths will still remain glowing and the passengers can walk on that path and get out.

The rules of both America’s Federal Aviation Administration and Europe’s Aviation Safety Agency stipulate that the exit path should be clearly visible even in darkness, but if there is already bright light in the cabin, then this faint glow will be difficult to see. This is why by keeping the lights dim, these exit signs are visible more effectively and passengers are able to recognize the route quickly.

Airplane Light Explained

The lights are dimmed in aircraft for safety reasons.

This is also a reason

A study report by the Flight Safety Foundation says that if the plane is filled with gas or smoke, passengers can lose up to 83 percent of their ability to recognize direction. In such a situation, if the lights are less than before and the exit signs are shining clearly, then it becomes easier for the passengers to move in the right direction.

Instructions for opening window curtains

At the time of takeoff and landing, the crew asks passengers to open the window curtains. This is also the security reason behind this. By allowing natural light from outside, both the crew and passengers are able to get a better idea of the external conditions. If there is any problem in the engine or some unusual condition is seen in the fans, then information about it can be found in time by looking out the window.

Many such cases have come to light when passengers noticed a technical fault from the window and informed the crew about it. In this way the right decision could be taken in time.
