Long-haul flights to New Zealand are not easy. Sitting for 15 or more hours can leave even experienced travellers exhausted. That is exactly the problem Air New Zealand is trying to solve with its new Skynest sleep pods.
The airline plans to introduce lie-flat bunk beds designed especially for Economy and Premium Economy passengers. The idea is simple. Give travellers a real place to lie down and rest during some of the longest commercial flights in the world.
A New Way to Sleep in Economy Class
Skynest will feature six lie-flat pods arranged like bunk beds inside the aircraft. These pods will be placed between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins on the Boeing 787-9.
Each pod offers a private sleeping space with a full-length mattress, pillow, sheets and blanket. Travellers will also get soft lighting, ventilation and charging ports. The setup is designed to feel calm and comfortable, even at 35,000 feet.
Passengers booking Economy or Premium Economy seats can add a four-hour sleep session to their journey. The airline plans these sessions around natural sleep cycles to help travellers settle in, sleep comfortably, and wake up feeling refreshed.
Initially, two Skynest sessions will be available per flight.
Why Skynest Matters for Long-Haul Travel
New Zealand is one of the most remote destinations in the world. Many travellers spend long hours in the air to reach the country. Air New Zealand believes better rest can make these journeys feel more manageable.
The airline has tested the concept with more than 200 customers during development. The goal is to improve comfort without requiring passengers to book expensive Business Class seats.
Skynest also builds on the airline’s earlier innovation, the Skycouch, which allows Economy passengers to create a couch-style seat space.

A Small Change That Could Improve Long Flights
Here is the thing. Many travellers accept that long-haul flights are tiring. But better rest can make a huge difference to how people feel when they arrive.
Skynest is not trying to replace premium cabins. It simply gives more travellers the chance to sleep properly on ultra-long flights.
For anyone planning a trip to New Zealand, that could make the journey feel a lot easier.
