New Delhi: Air India has introduced a new and cheaper ‘Basic’ fare for passengers traveling on domestic routes. Its purpose is to reduce the fare by removing some extra services provided with the ticket, so that passengers can save more. This new fare has been implemented on a trial basis in the economy class of some selected domestic routes. This is a great option for those who want to travel on a low budget and do not need other in-flight facilities.

What are the new changes?

Baggage Limit: Passengers booking tickets in ‘Basic’ fare can carry 15 kg of check-in baggage and 7 kg of cabin baggage free of charge.

Food will not be available: These tickets do not include free in-flight meals. However, passengers will be given free tea or coffee.

You can book food in advance: Passengers who require food can pre-book their food by paying extra up to 24 hours before the flight takes off. There are options like vegetarian, non-vegetarian, Jain and diabetic.

What if the flight timings change?

If for any reason the flight timings change or passengers are transferred to another flight, their ordered food will be automatically transferred to the new flight. If it is not possible to provide food, the entire amount will be refunded.

How different from current fares?

Air India already has three categories namely Value, Classic, and Flex. Apart from these, ‘Basic’ fare is the fourth category. In the old three categories, free food and other facilities will continue to be available as before. Air India has clarified that the new ‘Basic’ fare is completely optional and it will not have any impact on the existing fares.

At present, ‘Basic’ tickets will be available only through Air India’s direct booking channels. Booking can be done through Air India website, Air India mobile app, customer contact center and airport ticket office. Air India will decide to start this service on other routes only on the basis of feedback received from passengers. This new change is very beneficial for those people who have less luggage and who do not want to eat food in the flight. However, officials say that while booking tickets, check the baggage limit and other charges carefully.
