Ahmednagar Lok Sabha constituency of Maharashtra is one of the important seats of the state. Congress ruled this seat for 46 years. Congress won from 1952 to 1996. In the year 1998, the victory chariot of Congress came to a halt. The party started struggling for victory but has not been successful till date. Presently this seat is in the possession of Bharatiya Janata Party. Sujay Vikhe Patil is the MP from here. Once again Congress is struggling to regain its lost supremacy on this seat. At the same time, BJP will fight to maintain its victory on this seat.

Ahmednagar Lok Sabha constituency is important in many ways. Sugarcane, millet, cotton and wheat are grown in large quantities in this area. Ahmednagar has a special identity due to these major crops. Sugarcane is the largest crop in the area. Due to which there are many sugar mills here. Many ancient temples, forts and historical buildings are present in Ahmednagar. The British had interned the country’s former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the Ahmed Nizamshah fort located here in 1940. This fort is quite famous, tourists come to see it.

Was the capital of Malik Ahmed Nizam

Ahmednagar is situated on the banks of Sina river. It is a district that was created after the defeat of the Maratha Empire in the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1818. Till the country’s independence in 1947, Ahmednagar district remained a part of the Central Division of Bombay Presidency. In the year 1960, it was declared a new district of Maharashtra state. If we look at its old history, Malik Ahmed Nizamshah had established his authority here in the year 1490. This city was named Ahmednagar after the name of Malik Ahmed. Malik Ahmed Nizamshah made it his capital.

Ahmednagar is also known for its heroine Chandbibi. This is the same Chand Bibi who had given a tough fight to Akbar’s son Crown Prince Murad. Chand Bibi’s tomb is built in Ahmednagar. It is included in the major historical places of Ahmednagar. Mughal palaces, gardens etc. are also places to visit here. Rahuri assembly, included in this Lok Sabha constituency, is very important religiously. The second most important temple of Shani Dev is present here. Apart from this, grand religious events are organized here during Navratri.

Congress ruled for 46 years

The Ahmednagar Lok Sabha seat was ruled by a Congress chhatra. She continued winning here for 46 consecutive years. In the parliamentary elections held in 1952, Congress registered its first victory and Uttamchand R Bogawat was elected MP. In the 1957 elections, the voters here gave victory to RK Khadilkar. Motilal Firodia in 1962, Anantrao Patil in 1967, Annasaheb Shinde in 1971 and 1977 won on Congress ticket.

In the year 1980, Chandrabhan Athare Patil became MP. Yashwantrao Gadakh Patil of Congress became MP thrice by winning consecutively in 1984, 1989 and 1991. In 1994, by-election was held on this seat in which Maruti Devaram Shelke of Congress won. In the 1996 elections also, Shelke was elected MP on Congress Party ticket.

BJP captured

The decline of Congress started in the 1998 elections. Shiv Sena stopped the party’s victory chariot. In the elections held in 1998, Shiv Sena’s Balasaheb Vikhe Patil won by defeating the Congress candidate. After that, in the elections held in 1999, this seat went to BJP’s account. Dilip Kumar Gandhi of Bharatiya Janata Party became MP in the election. In the 2004 elections, Tukaram Gadakh of Nationalist Congress Party won the election. After this BJP captured this seat. In 2009, Dilip Kumar Gandhi of BJP was again elected MP. Gandhi won from here in 2014 also. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP fielded Sujay Vikhe Patil and he won the elections.

Ahmednagar Lok Sabha seat is held by Bharatiya Janata Party. Talking about the assemblies of this region, out of 6 assemblies here, Nationalist Congress is in control of 4 and BJP is in control of 2. Among these, BJP has control over Shevgaon and Shrigonda assembly. At the same time, Nationalist Congress Party MLAs have won Rahuri, Parner, Ahmednagar city, and Karjat Jamkhed assembly.
