Somvati Amavasya: Amavasya of Adhikamas is being celebrated across the country today. Devotees are taking bath in all the holy rivers including Ganga since Brahma Muhurta. Amavasya falling on Monday in this Adhikamas is very special because it is also called Somvati Amavasya. This day is considered extremely auspicious to receive special blessings of Lord Vishnu, Lakshmi ji and ancestors (Pitra).

According to Drik Panchang, Amavasya Tithi has started on June 14 at 12:19 pm and will continue till 8:23 am today. According to the scriptures, the festival should be celebrated on the day when Amavasya Tithi falls at the time of sunrise i.e. in Udiya Tithi. Since Amavasya is ending on Monday i.e. today, Somvati Amavasya is being celebrated.

It is believed that religious activities done on Somvati Amavasya provide thousand times benefits. By worshiping Lord Vishnu on this day, one gets the virtue of performing crores of yagyas. Also, by offering Pitra Tarpan, Pitra Dosha is removed. By bathing in the holy river, donating and chanting mantras, one gets unlimited virtue. It is said in the scriptures that every good deed done on the new moon day of Adhikamas has permanent results.

Auspicious time for worship on Amavasya

On Amavasya day, wake up in Brahma Muhurta and take bath from 4:00 am to 5:30 am. This time is considered the best. The most auspicious time to offer tarpan to the ancestors is between 6:00 am to 8:00 am.

Simple method of worship on Amavasya

Wake up in Brahma Muhurta and take bath and wear clean clothes. After this, clean the puja room and install the idol of Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi. First of all, offer yellow flowers, Akshat, sandalwood and incense to Lord Vishnu. After this, light the lamp and offer food. While worshiping, chant the mantra “Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay”. Also do not forget to recite Vishnu Sahastranam.

What to donate on Amavasya?

According to the scriptures, donations made on Somvati or Adhikamas Amavasya not only provide peace to the souls of ancestors but also reduce the effect of Shani Dosh. All devotees should donate things like black sesame seeds, intact wheat, clothes, umbrellas, shoes and feeding fodder to cows as per their devotion.

Adhikamas is the giver of salvation

According to Drik Pangang, Adhikamas is considered very important for chanting and penance. This month is dedicated to Lord Purushottam, who is another form of Lord Vishnu. According to the importance of Purushottam month mentioned in Brihannaradiya Purana, this month is selfless and gives salvation. The person who worships Lord Vishnu with devotion in this month, becomes free from all the karmas and becomes the real form of Shri Vishnu. As a result of worshiping and fasting for just one month, a living being becomes free from death and attains the supreme state.

Regarding the month of Purushottam month, Lord Shri Krishna says, ‘By performing Chaturmasik Yagya, one reaches heaven and after enjoying various pleasures there, one has to be born again on earth. But, whoever worships this Purushottam month with full devotion and devotion will definitely attain me along with his family. After attaining me, he will be free from birth-death, half-disease and other types of sufferings and will not be born in this world.
