Can we decide the date of auspicious work in Adhikamas or not?
Adhik Maas 2026: Adhikamas is a month dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This year this month has started from 17th May, which will continue till 15th June. Adhikamas comes every third year, since Lord Vishnu has given his name to this month, hence it is also called Purushottam month. This month is also called Malmas. Adhikamaas is considered best for worship, bathing, charity, chanting, penance etc. There is a religious belief that worship, bathing, donation, chanting, penance etc. done in this month give more results than on normal days.
In this month, auspicious and auspicious works like marriage, engagement, house warming, naming ceremony and Mundan Sanskar are prohibited. This is because this is the time for meditation and at this time it is advised to stay away from worldly pleasures. According to religious beliefs, Sankranti does not occur during Adhikamas, hence auspicious works are not done in this month. In such a situation, things like marriage and engagement cannot be done in this month, but their date can be fixed.

According to the scriptures, the month of Malmas is not inauspicious for fixing the date of marriage, roka, engagement, mundan etc. That means, verbally, the date of marriage, roka, engagement, mundan etc. can be decided in this month. There is no restriction of any kind in doing this. Because there is no need to see an auspicious time to confirm these auspicious works. However, some scholars advise not to fix dates for auspicious activities in Adhikamas unless it is absolutely necessary.
Why are auspicious works not done in Adhikamaas?
According to astrologers, before doing any auspicious work, the position of planets like Sun, Venus, Jupiter is seen. It is advisable to do auspicious work only when these planets are in a favorable position. Sun God’s Sankranti does not fall in Adhikamas. In such a situation, the glory of Sun God is not available for auspicious works at this time. Therefore, one cannot get the blessings of Sun God in auspicious work, due to which problems arise in life. This is why it is advised to avoid doing auspicious work in Adhikamas.
