Aamir Khan is set to be honoured with the Screen Icon Award at the 37th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), adding another international recognition to his four-decade-long career in cinema. The festival will take place from October 21 to November 1, 2026, in Singapore, where Khan will also attend a special screening of his epic film Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India.
Aamir Khan Screen Icon Award: SGIFF to honour Bollywood star
Aamir Khan has been named the recipient of this year’s Screen Icon Award by SGIFF. The actor-filmmaker will also take part in the ‘In Conversation With’ session at the festival on October 22, where he will discuss his career and experiences in filmmaking.
Khan’s honour is part of a programme that also recognises filmmakers and actors from across Asia. Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda will be the recipient of the Cinema Honorary Award.
Aamir Khan to reminisce about Lagaan 25 years later with Ashutosh Gowariker
One of the highlights of the festival will be a special screening of Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, 25 years after the film’s release in 2001. Director Ashutosh Gowariker will also join Khan at the screening. The film will be screened on October 23 at Golden Village VivoCity as part of SGIFF’s Southeast Asian release.
Lagaan was released in 2001, with Khan playing Bhuvan, a villager who leads his community in challenging British rule through a cricket match. In 2002, the film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards, which was won by No Man’s Land.
SGIFF 2026: The Assassin(s) to open festival
South Korean thriller The Assassin(s), starring Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il and Lee Min-ho, will open the 37th edition of SGIFF. The festival will also showcase more than 25 Singaporean productions and co-productions, alongside an expanded programme celebrating Asian and international cinema.
