IndiGo increases fuel surcharge, flight tickets will become expensive from March 14

India’s largest airline IndiGo has decided to impose fuel surcharge on domestic and international flights. This new fee will be applicable from 12:01 am on March 14, 2026. The company has taken this step due to the sharp increase in fuel prices, which has increased due to the ongoing geopolitical tension in West Asia.

Why was fuel surcharge increased?

Due to increasing tensions in West Asia and conflict related to Iran, the prices of crude oil and aviation fuel have increased rapidly around the world. According to the Jet Fuel Monitor of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), jet fuel prices in the region have increased by more than 85%. Since aviation turbine fuel (ATF) is the largest operating expense for airlines, the increase in its price has a direct impact on the airlines’ costs.

How much will be charged on domestic and international flights

IndiGo said that the new fuel charge will be imposed according to each sector (part of the journey) and will vary according to distance.

  • Domestic and Indian Subcontinent: ₹425
  • Middle East: ₹900
  • South-East Asia and China: ₹1,800
  • Africa and West Asia: ₹1,800
  • Europe: ₹2,300

Trying to have less impact on passengers

The airline said that if the full impact of increased fuel prices is passed on to tickets, then the base fare will have to be increased significantly. But at present the company has decided to impose limited fuel charges so that there is no sudden burden on the passengers.

IndiGo’s network and operations

InterGlobe Aviation’s airline IndiGo has a fleet of more than 400 aircraft. In the year 2025, the airline will carry about 12.4 crore passengers. This airline currently connects more than 135 destinations across the world. The company has said that it will keep an eye on the prices of crude oil and if necessary, changes in fuel surcharge can also be made.
