Why did kerosene come to mind?

Amidst the gas shortage, some users on social media are discussing ‘blue oil’ i.e. kerosene and old-fashioned alternatives. But now there are many states where this oil is not available. In the last few years, the government has delivered gas to every home under the ‘Ujjwala Yojana’, due to which the consumption of kerosene has fallen by 77%. According to the report published in Digital Parliament, by February 2026, 21 states and union territories of the country have now become completely ‘kerosene-free’. This means that government subsidized oil is no longer available at ration shops there.

According to government data, states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, Puducherry, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands have become kerosene free. Subsidized oil has stopped being available here. Some of its quota is given to the states only for special situations or emergencies.
